NIGERIAN BANDIT LEADER’S APPEARANCE AT PEACE MEETING SPARKS OUTRAGE

Ado Aleru, a notorious bandit kingpin with a N5 million bounty on his head, has ignited widespread outrage after attending a government-endorsed peace meeting in Katsina State. Aleru, who has been wanted by the Nigerian Police since 2020, appeared in a viral video addressing government officials, traditional rulers, and security operatives, calling for peace and mutual understanding between Fulani herders and farmers.

Controversy Surrounding the Meeting

The meeting, aimed at fostering dialogue in the conflict-ridden region, has been criticized for allowing Aleru to participate without facing arrest. Critics argue that this approach undermines the rule of law and emboldens criminality. A top Katsina State government source, speaking under anonymity, condemned the gathering, questioning why law enforcement failed to apprehend Aleru despite his open appearance.

Government’s Defense

However, the Katsina State government defended the initiative, with Commissioner for Security and Home Affairs Nasir Mua’zu stating that Aleru and seven other bandit leaders had voluntarily surrendered and denounced terrorism. According to Mua’zu, the group released 17 kidnapped victims as a show of goodwill and promised to release more. Mua’zu emphasized that anyone genuinely renouncing banditry would be accepted and reintegrated, citing Islamic and Geneva Convention standards.

Criticism and Concerns

Critics argue that while amnesty can be strategic, it must not come at the expense of justice for victims. Aleru’s past activities, including killings and kidnappings in the North-West, have raised concerns about the government’s approach to dealing with notorious bandits. The controversy surrounding Aleru’s appearance at the peace meeting highlights the complexities of addressing security challenges in Nigeria ¹.
